The main sign that your HRT is working is that your specific symptoms will start to reduce. It can take up to 3 months to get the full benefits when you start HRT, or adjust your dose up. As everyone's symptoms are different, the best way to know whether it's working is to track your own symptoms on a weekly or monthly basis.

If you are still experiencing symptoms after being on HRT for 3-6 months, it might be that the dose or type of HRT you have been recommended is not working for you. If you are taking a transdermal form of HRT (e.g. a patch, gel or spray) this is usually because you are not absorbing the oestrogen fully. You may need an expert to change the dose or type of oestrogen you are on.

Alternatively, if you are on HRT but have persistent low sex drive this might be a sign you need to add in testosterone.

If you are on HRT, but you have vaginal symptoms like dryness or painful sex this could be a sign you need to add in a vaginal treatment.

A blood test can help us assess whether you are absorbing oestrogen as expected, and whether it is safe to add in testosterone.
