Oestrogel - the benefits and how to use it

Yes, the oestrogen in Oestrgoel is body identical. This means it has the same chemical structure as the oestrogen in our bodies.

Many women will feel the benefits of HRT within a few days. However, everyone responds differently. The full benefits of oestrogel, or any other hormonal medications, can take up to 3 months to kick in. This is why your treatment review takes place 3 months after starting HRT.

Oestrogel takes 2-5 minutes to dry. It is usually best to apply after a shower in the morning, and let the gel dry fully before dressing.

There is no evidence that Oestrogel causes weight gain. Some women will experience bloating when they start a new hormonal medication, and this should settle over the first 3 months. This is not the same as weight gain. Many women who start HRT actually feel better, and therefore want to exercise more - leading to weight loss.

Common side effects can include:

• Breast tenderness or pain
• Bloating
• Abdominal pain
• Headaches
• Mood changes

Side effects often settle in the first few weeks, and should have resolved fully by your 3 month review with your clinician. If you are worried about side effects, or they are impacting your quality of life, you should speak to a healthcare professional.

1 pump measure of oestrogel contains 25mcg oestradiol. This is the same amount of oestrogen as delivered through as 25mcg patch.

Your prescription will tell you how many pumps you need to use each day. Typically women start on 1-2 pumps per day, and adjust up with their doctor at their review appointments.

• 1 pump = 25mcg estradiol
• 2 pump = 50mcg estradiol
• 3 pump = 75mcg estradiol
• 4 pump = 100mcg estradiol

Oestrogel might not be suitable for everyone. It may not be recommended if you have a history of certain cancers, blood clots, untreated high blood pressure, or liver disease.

That said, it’s one of the most widely prescribed and well-tolerated forms of HRT for good reason. If it’s not the right option for you, there are alternatives, from patches to sprays to tablets. Always consult a specialist.
